Visit to the Kowhai Satelitte at Heretaunga Intermediate

Today many of the students froom Room 2 had a fabulous time visiting the Intermediate students at Kowhai school. It was a wonderful chance for our older Central students to become familiar with the Intermediate classrooms. There were fun minibeast crafts to make and the school put on a fabulous morning tea for students and staff. It was great seeing students interact so well with each other and we are keen to visit again.

A big thank you to Kowhai Intermediate for hosting us!

Topic Science - Mini Beasts

Barry made a beautiful Spider out of salt dough for our mural.

The students enjoys creating spiders this week.  They made savoury spiders using noodles and cheerios.  Then they made sweet spiders ensuring that they had two body parts, eight legs and between zero and 12 eyes.  The students are very motivated and really enjoy this way of learning.

Topic - Minibeasts

Room 2 are learning through art and food this term about our topic.  We have two focus questions that we are asking about each minibeast we study each week.  They are where do they live?  And What do they eat?  The children are really enjoying this topic especially when it comes to Friday and we do our cooking.

Room 2 went to the Aquarium.

This week we went to the aquarium and the students were really engaged interacting and looking at the different animals that were there.  We learned lots of interesting facts. It was really good to see the animals close up instead of just seeing them on a screen.

The students in Room 2 are learning to participate in small group work or play with minimum support

The boys enjoyed playing with play dough.  This was not a set activity.  One student was playing with the play dough and the others gravitated towards the table.  Connor was a delight he searched for something to give Cody to put into his play dough.  It is lovely watching the boys gel as a group.

Topic - Sea Creatures

We have been doing lots of art while we have been learning about many different sea creatures.  We have learnt lots about the Giant octopus.  They live for about three years.  After the female lays her eggs she has to stay with them.  She needs to cover them and defend them against would-be predators. She needs to gently waft currents over them so they get a constant supply of fresh, oxygenated water. And she does this continuously, never leaving and never eating.  Octopuses are masters of camouflage that can change their shape, colour and texture to perfectly blend into their environment.   We have really enjoyed learning about Giant octopus.

Topic - Sea Creatures

We have been learning about Puffer fish.  We are amazed by what they can do.  Sometimes they make themselves bigger by sucking in water and sometimes by sucking in air.  They do this so that predators don't eat them.  We think that they are very cute!

Room 2 went to see a magic show

We were lucky to see a magic show on Monday this week.  We were amazed when fire came out of a box and then just stopped.  The magician made some colourful scarves come out of a pot and a bunch of flowers out of a stick. Then he put a toy rabbit into a box and just like magic a real one came out.  Cody from our room even got to go up and help him with a trick.  The magician did lots of cool tricks.  We all clapped.  All of out friends from Kowhai were there too.  They clapped too.
